To celebrate Make Music Day, the South Huntsville Public Library and the Huntsville Concert Band are hosting a Sousapalooza on Tuesday, June 21, from 7:00 to 8:00 PM, on the north lawn of the Library at 7901-L Bailey Cove Rd SE, Huntsville, AL 35802. Any and all woodwind, brass, and percussion players in the community are welcome to play with us!

To join the band, visit https://www.makemusicday.org/national-projects/sousapalooza/ and click on the links to download the music for the instrument/part you want to play. Then bring your music, your horn or percussion gear, a music stand, and a chair to the Library, and play with the band at 7:00 PM! There is no charge to participate. Of course, you’re also welcome to bring a lawn chair and just listen.

Reed players who provide their email addresses at the event are eligible to receive a free VENN reed, compliments of D’Addario.

In case of light rain, we will play on the Library Patio, adjacent to the north lawn. In case of severe weather, the event will be canceled.

Make Music Day is a free celebration of music around the world on June 21, the summer solstice. Launched in 1982 in France as Fête de la Musique, it is now held on the same day in more than 1,000 cities in 120 countries.

Make Music Day is open to anyone who wants to take part. Every kind of musician — young and old, amateur and professional, of every musical persuasion — pours onto streets, parks, plazas, and porches to share their music with friends, neighbors, and strangers. All of it is free and open to the public.

In 2011, Make Music Chicago pioneered the “Sousapalooza” – an invitation for hundreds of brass, wind, and percussion players to come together and sightread the music of The March King, John Philip Sousa. After a couple of years off during the pandemic, Sousapalooza returns in 2022 in cities across the U.S., including Huntsville!
