Birmingham’s Apple store is among 30 across the country set to temporarily close on Thursday in response to a surge in coronavirus cases.
Alabama has two Apple stores -- one at The Summit shopping center in Hoover and another at Huntsville’s Bridge Street Town Centre. It’s unclear why Birmingham was pegged for temporary closure while Huntsville will remain open; Apple could not be reached for comment.
Alabama is among several southern states experiencing sharp increases in COVID-19 cases. The state set a second consecutive all-time record for COVID-19 hospitalizations on Tuesday with 776 such hospitalizations. Cases overall rose by 997 from Tuesday to Wednesday, and Alabama has reported more than 38,000 cases since the pandemic began.
Other coronavirus hot spots where Apple is temporarily closing its retail stores include Texas, Los Angeles, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi and Oklahoma.
