Families across Huntsville will come together this weekend for the 23rd Annual Rocket City Buddy Walk. The celebration promotes Down syndrome awareness while building community connections throughout North Alabama.
Bringing Up Down Syndrome (BUDS) organizes this annual gathering to support individuals with Down syndrome and their families. The organization serves as North Alabama’s primary resource for these families. Additionally, they provide financial assistance through grants for medical expenses and therapeutic equipment.
“Community connection plays a vital role in this journey,” explains BUDS President Caneilia Patterson. Furthermore, the organization helps families access essential resources and support systems.
The walk itself spans less than half a mile around the UAH campus. However, the event offers much more than walking. Families can enjoy balloon artists, bounce houses, face painting, and interactive games. Moreover, attendees will find a bungee trampoline, photo booth opportunities, and character meet-and-greets.
This celebration serves as BUDS’ largest fundraising effort of the year. Therefore, proceeds directly support their ongoing programs and services. The organization also runs scholarship programs for graduating seniors with Down syndrome. Additionally, they coordinate holiday assistance through their annual angel tree program.
Educational displays throughout the venue provide Down syndrome facts and information. These resources help community members better understand the condition. Patterson emphasizes the importance of exposure and awareness in building inclusive communities.
“People with Down syndrome enjoy the same activities and foods as everyone else,” Patterson notes. Consequently, this event demonstrates these shared interests while promoting acceptance.
The Huntsville event welcomes all community members at no cost. This approach encourages broader participation and community engagement.
