Persian Festival of Fire – Chahar Shanbeh Suri

The Camp Huntsville (Facebook)

Join Huntsville’s Persian/Iranian Community on Tuesday, March 16, as we wish away bad luck for the New Year!

The Festival of Fire, or Chahar Shanbeh Suri as it is called in Farsi, is a festival dating back more than 2,500 years. The ceremony is a prelude to Nowruz, the Iranian New Year, which begins with the arrival of spring on the vernal equinox.

On the last Tuesday of the year, families and friends gather together at sunset and torch a series of small bonfires. “May your rosy red glow be mine, and my sickly yellow pallor yours,” they chant as they make leaps over the fire.

During this purification night, one asks to be rid of sickness and problems, and to be blessed with warmth and energy in the new year.

Friends of all nationalities and backgrounds are welcome to join for a beautiful night of Iranian culture! You’ll taste Aashe Reshte, soup that is traditionally served for this celebration, but we encourage you to bring your own Food/Tea/Soup/Snacks to dine together over a picnic.
