Children get a feel for pioneer life in this exhibit at the EarlyWorks Children's Museum in downtown Huntsville, Ala. The museum's foundation has started a GoFundMe try to keep its programs going during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The foundation supporting Huntsville’s EarlyWorks Children’s Museum has started a GoFundMe drive to raise “much needed help to save” the downtown children’s museum. The foundation says its goal is $500,000 to keep the museum going during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The COVID-19 shutdown closed the downtown museum from March through June, the foundation said. Its largest fundraising event, the Whistlestop weekend barbecue competition, was also closed by the virus, and Santa’s Village is threatened this December.

The museum also hosts private events such as weddings, family reunions and corporate events, but those have been all limited by the virus. The accumulated closures have reduced business “by at least 75 percent,” the foundation said.

“These much needed donations will go towards our operational costs and programming,” the foundation said. “Every dollar will help us continue the educational initiatives put in place when we opened our doors.”
